The Senate has resolved to write the Chief Justice of Nigeria after a court order reportedly stopped them from vetoing the Electoral Act bill.
Senate President Bukola Saraki
The Senate will write the Chief Justice of the Federation, Justice Walter Onnoghen over a recent judgment by a Federal High Court stopping the National Assembly from overriding President Muhammadu Buhari’s veto on the amended Electoral Act.
According to the Senate, the court order is an interference in the workings of the National Assembly which is not in consonance with constitutional democracy.
Thed decision was reached after Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio raised the issue based on media reports that a court had asked the National Assembly to stop an alleged plan by the parliament to veto the recent rejection of the 2010 Electoral Act amendment by President Muhammadu Buhari.
Senate Majority Leader, Senator Ahmad Lawan concurred that the court judgment was meant to stop the National Assembly from performing its constitutional duties which is against democratic practices.
When Senate President Bukola Saraki put the question, it was unanimously adopted that a letter be written to the CJN to complain against the judge that made such a court pronouncement.
