Photos and Videos of the Ongoing Demolition of Houses & Properties in Waterfront Communities in Lekki, Lagos

The inhabitants of Otodo-Gbame, a fishing settlement outside Lekki, Lagos, are raising an alarm about an ongoing demolition of houses and the destruction of their properties by the government.

According to photos and videos posted online by Twitter users and Amnesty International, many residents in Otodo Gbame, a waterfront community in the Lekki area of Lagos state, have been rendered homeless, following a demolition exercise which happened on Friday.

Amnesty International has condemned the action, describing it as a violation of the right of the people.

“Thousands who live at #OtodoGbame have right to housing. Their humanity is being violated by rendering them homeless,” the agency tweeted.

“Forced eviction of OtodoGbame community violates court ruling. Putting the poor through this is a violation of human right.”

We had reported earlier that residents had claimed that about 8.30 a.m. on Friday, three backhoes accompanied by anti-terror police officers and officials of the Lagos State environmental task force arrived the community and started pulling down houses and other structures.
They claimed they were shocked by the demolition as they had not been served notice of demolition by the state government. One of the affected residents accused the government of being unfair to the poor.

This is the second time in five months that houses in the community will be demolished.
