Thunderstorms to Hit Nigeria as Flood Risk Rises Across Several States

Nigeria's weather agency has predicted cloudy skies and thunderstorms across the country from Wednesday to Friday.

The agency said Wednesday will see patches of clouds in the north with morning thunderstorms and light rains over parts of Taraba and Kebbi. Later in the day, isolated thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected over parts of Taraba, Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Sokoto, Katsina, Zamfara, Jigawa, Kano and Kaduna.

The North-Central region will experience morning thunderstorms with light rains over parts of Nasarawa, Niger, Benue and the Federal Capital Territory.

Afternoon and evening hours will bring thunderstorms with moderate rains over most of the region.

The south will be cloudy with morning rains over parts of Lagos, Ondo, Ogun, Oyo, Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, Cross River, Abia, Imo, Ebonyi and Akwa Ibom states.

Moderate rains are expected later in the day across most of the southern region.

Thursday will bring patches of clouds in the north with morning thunderstorms and light rains over parts of Jigawa, Kano, Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe and Kaduna.

Afternoon and evening thunderstorms with moderate rains are forecast for Jigawa, Kano, Kaduna, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa and Taraba.

The North-Central region will have sunny skies with patchy clouds, with morning thunderstorms and light rains over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, Plateau, Niger and Benue.

Thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected later across the entire region.

The south will see light morning rains over parts of Ondo, Ogun, Abia, Imo, Enugu, Ebonyi, Lagos, Akwa Ibom and Cross River.

Continuous rains are expected over most of the region later in the day.

There is high possibility of flooding over parts of Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom and Cross River during this period.

Friday will bring partly cloudy skies in the north with chances of thunderstorms and moderate rains over Taraba and Adamawa in the morning.

Afternoon and evening thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected over Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Kano, Jigawa, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Adamawa and Taraba.

The central region will have sunny skies with patchy clouds, with morning thunderstorms and light rains over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa and Niger.

Thunderstorms with moderate rains are anticipated later across most of the region.

The south will be cloudy with morning moderate rains over parts of Ondo, Ebonyi, Lagos, Ogun, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River.

Moderate rains are expected over most of the southern region later in the day.

Strong winds may come before the rains in areas where thunderstorms are forecast.

The agency advised people to secure loose objects to prevent damage.

States at risk of flash floods should activate emergency systems immediately.

Driving in heavy rain should be avoided and electrical appliances should be disconnected.

Residents should stay away from tall trees to avoid falling branches and stay informed through weather updates.
