Former Councillor Detained Over Alleged Attack on Elderly Woman

A court in Benue State has ordered a former councillor to be held in prison while awaiting trial on charges including @ssault and attempted culpable homicide.

Daniel Ujah, 43, was brought to court by police who say he criminally entered a woman's compound and att@cked her.

According to police records, on August 28, the man allegedly went into the compound of an elderly woman at her home.

He beat her and pushed her into a fire, causing burns to her body and burning her clothes.

The woman had to be taken to hospital for treatment.

A relative of the woman reported the incident to police, saying the man also threatened to k!ll the woman and said nobody could stop him.

The man was charged with criminal trespass, intimidation, @ssault causing inj@ry and attempt to commit culpable homicide.

When the case came to court on Wednesday, the man said he was not guilty.

His lawyer asked the judge to release him on bail while the case proceeds, but the prosecutor asked the court to keep him locked up.

The judge agreed and ordered him remanded in custody at the correctional centre.

The case will return to court on September 22 for the next hearing.
