Gov Sanwo-Olu Gifts N10M To LASU’s Best Graduate

Gov Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has announced a N10 million cash gift to the overall best graduating student of Lagos State University (LASU) for the 2023/2024 academic session, Miss Isioma Sybil Nwosu.

Nwosu, a Biochemistry student from the Faculty of Science, graduated with an impressive CGPA of 4.93.

The announcement was made during LASU’s 28th Convocation Ceremony held at the Buba Marwa Auditorium, Ojo campus. Represented by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, Governor Sanwo-Olu praised Nwosu’s hard work and encouraged other students to follow her example.

The convocation also saw the awarding of honorary doctorates and distinguished titles. NDLEA Chairman, Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (retd), received a Doctor of Humane Letters for his contributions to national development, while former Lagos Deputy Governor Otunba Olufemi Pedro was honored with a Doctor of Business. Prof. Joseph Olagunju was named a Distinguished Professor.

Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of education in shaping society and called on leaders to maintain a dynamic education system that addresses real-world challenges. He also highlighted government initiatives like the Job Initiative Lagos (JIL), which prepares final-year students for the job market.

He described the graduation of 11,917 students as a celebration of dedication and a stepping stone into a bright future. 

The breakdown includes:

971 Diploma certificates

8,711 First degrees

2,235 Postgraduate degrees

 302 Postgraduate Diplomas

1,132 Academic Masters

639 Professional Masters

125 PhDs

37 Professional Doctorates

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, thanked the state government for its support and noted the recent accreditation of 43 out of 44 academic programmes. She also announced the launch of new postgraduate programmes under an Africa-wide STEM education initiative.

Chancellor Prof. Gbolahan Elias (SAN) congratulated the graduates and urged them to stay focused, resilient, and innovative as they begin the next chapter of their lives.
