


The Ogun State Police Command has arrested five hunters in connection with the tragic death of a colleague during a group hunting expedition in the Ajinawo area of Yewa North Local Government Area.
The Public Relations Officer of the Command, CSP Omolola Odutola, who confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Tuesday, said the incident occurred around 3 pm on Sunday.
Odutola stated that the deceased hunter, identified as Taiwo Bolugbe, was fatally shot when his Dane gun accidentally discharged while he was attempting to retrieve a hunted animal.
“The accident occurred around 1500hrs when the victim, Taiwo Bolugbe, attempted to retrieve a hunted animal. His Dane gun reportedly slipped from his shoulder, discharged accidentally, and fatally struck him in the neck and lower jaw,” the police spokesperson said.
Despite efforts by fellow hunters to save him, he succumbed to his injuries.
Odutola said the police were alerted to the incident at approximately 16:30hrs, leading to the immediate arrest of five hunters linked to the case.
The police spokesperson said the matter has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a thorough investigation.
Odutola urged hunters and firearm handlers to exercise extreme caution to prevent such devastating accidents.
The Command reiterated its warning on the responsible handling of firearms, particularly during hunting expeditions, to avert avoidable tragedies.
