Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, paid a courtesy visit to the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), the highest decision-making body of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos on Tuesday, January 14.

Meranda, accompanied by other members of the State Assembly, visited the GAC at Lagos House Marina to provide an update on the recent developments at the legislative house and to seek the council’s blessings.

Speaking after the meeting, Meranda said the visit was to brief the GAC on the events leading to the impeachment of the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, and her subsequent emergence as the new leader of the House.

“We came to brief them about what happened at the House of Assembly yesterday and to seek their blessings, which we have gotten,
” she said.

Meranda’s emergence follows the impeachment of Obasa, who served as Speaker for nearly a decade.

Obasa was removed on Monday by more than two-thirds of the 40-member Assembly over allegations of misconduct and financial mismanagement.

The lawmaker representing Agege Constituency I was first elected to the House in 2007 and became Speaker in June 2015. His impeachment marks the end of his lengthy tenure as leader of the legislative house.

Meranda, who previously served as Obasa’s deputy, now holds the distinction of being the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
