Tragedy struck as six family members died in a road accident in Jigawa State.
This comes barely 48 hours after a previous crash killed 14 people in Kafin Hausa Local Government Area of the state.
The latest incident occurred along the Auyo-Adiyani road in Guri Local Government Area on Tuesday night, December 10, 2024.
Witnesses revealed that the victims, all members of the same family from Adiyani, were returning from a condolence visit to relatives of those lost in the earlier accident.
The spokesperson of the State Police Command, DSP Shi’isu Lawan Adam, who confirmed the incidents, cautioned commercial drivers to avoid overloading and excessive speeding.
According to the PPRO, the first accident which occurred on December Monday, December 9 involved a Golf 3 wagon driven by an unidentified driver.
He said the driver applied a sudden break while at high speed, causing him to lose control. The vehicle somersaulted and fell inside the bridge, killing 14 passengers on board.
“It is with great sadness and sorrow that the Jigawa State Police Command announces the lone fatal car accident that occurred at Tage village, Kafin Hausa LGA on December 9, 2024, at approximately 1530 HRS,” the statement read.
"The accident occurred on golf 3 wagon with reg no. GML 842 XA JGS driven by an unidentified driver, coming from Hadejia town for Makera village Kafin Hausa LGA conveying fifteen (15) passengers.
"When the driver arrived at Tage bridge, which had been damaged during the previous rainy season, he applied a sudden break at high speed, causing him to lose control, the vehicle somersaulted, and fell inside the bridge, killing 14 passengers on board.
"Following receipt of the ominous report, a team of police officers led by DPO Bulangu Division arrived on the scene, evacuated the victims, and conveyed them to Hadejia General Hospital.
"Unfortunately, fourteen (14) passengers were confirmed dead by a medical doctor on call, including eight females, two (2) men, and four (4) young men, while the driver is still alive but unconscious. He was admitted and is responding to treatment. The case is currently being investigated.
"In addition to offering condolences to the surviving family, the Jigawa State Commissioner of Police, CP AT Abdullahi psc prays for the innocent souls of the deceased to rest in peace.
"As a result, he warns motorists, particularly commercial drivers, to avoid driving at high speeds, carrying an overload of people and goods, and using hard drugs while driving.
“The command, in collaboration with other security agencies, will arrest any erring drivers whose actions result in the death of innocent citizens and damage to their property.”
