Gov Monday Okpebholo of Edo State on Monday, approved the swearing-in of three High Court judges-designate that his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki, failed to swear in.

The three judges were among the eight judges cleared and recommended for appointment by the National Judicial Council in June 2023.

The three judges are Ojo Maureen Osa, Godwin Jeff Okundamiya, and Edoghogho Eboigbe.

In his inaugural speech shortly after taking the oath of office on November 12, 2024, Monday Okpebholo directed the Chief Judge of the state, Daniel Okungbowa, to investigate why the three judges were not sworn in by the immediate past governor.

A statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Musa Umar Ikhilor, said the three judges would be sworn in by the governor on December 2, 2024 (today) at 1:00 p.m. at the State Executive Council Chambers, Government House, Benin City.

Ikhilor said the decision by His Excellency was to reiterate his ardent belief in upholding the rule of law, respect for the principle of the doctrine of separation of powers as enshrined in the Constitution, and strengthening the judiciary to deliver on its mandate of justice and fairness to the general public.

It was reported that the immediate past governor had, in May 2024, sworn in five out of the eight judges and left behind the three.
