Cross Rivers: Gov Otu Approves ₦70,000 Minimum Wage For Workers

Gov Bassey Edet Otu of Cross River State, has approved a ₦70,000 minimum wage for the state workforce.

Governor Otu said he was committed to improving the lives of the state’s workforce, adding that the welfare of the workers remains a top priority of his government.

“Following a productive closed-door meeting with Labour leaders today, I am pleased to announce the approval of ₦70,000 as the new minimum wage for workers in our dear state, along with consequential adjustments.

“The welfare of our workers remains a top priority for this administration.  Together, we build a better Cross River State,” Otu announced on his X handle.

Otu had in May, during the Workers’ Day celebration, announced a ₦40,000 minimum wage for workers which was criticized by residents of the state.

In November, the governor approved the constitution of a Joint Public Service Negotiating and Implementation Committee on the ₦70,000 new National Minimum Wage.

According to his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Gill Nsa, the committee commenced sitting on November 1 subject to its convenience and round-up on time to enable compliance by the state.

The committee which had 16 members was headed by the state Head of Service, Dr Innocent Eteng.

Other members included Mr Gregory Olayi, state Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and Mr Monday Ogbodun, state Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC).
