Adebayo Kola, a Nigerian man, and his girlfriend, Bamidele Funmilayo, have been dragged to court.
They were arraigned before an Akure Chief Magistrates’ Court, for allegedly assaulting Kola’s baby mama, Temiosoro Kehinde.
The accused appeared before Magistrate O.I. Lebi on a three-count charge of assault, breach of peace, and emotional abuse.
According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on November 18, 2023, at Owe Akala Street, Oke Aro, in Akure, Ondo State.
Prosecutor, Augustine Omhenimhen told the court that the defendants physically attacked Kehinde, conducted themselves in a manner likely to disrupt public peace, and subjected her to verbal insults.
The prosecutor further described their actions as dehumanising and emotionally damaging.
The offences were said to contravene Sections 351, 249(D), and 15(1) of the Ondo State Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Law, 2021.
Both defendants denied the allegations and pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Seeking an adjournment, Omhenimhen informed the court that he intended to call three witnesses to testify in the case.
The defence counsel, Lawrence Onu, did not oppose the application but urged the court to grant the accused bail on lenient terms.
Magistrate Lebi granted bail to the defendants in the sum of N400,000 each, with two sureties in like sum.
The case was adjourned to December 9, 2024, for trial.
