Singing Colonial Song in UK Parliament Won’t Change Your Identity – Shehu Sani Mocks Badenoch

Posted by Thandiubani on Fri 08th Nov, 2024 - tori.ng

Sani said that a Nigerian singing the colonial song in the UK parliament will not change his or her true identity.

Former lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani has slammed newly-elected UK Conservative Party leader, Kemi Badenoch.

He was reacting to mocking comments made by Badenoch against Nigeria and other African countries.

While tackling Badenoch, Sani said that a Nigerian singing the colonial song in the UK parliament will not change his or her true identity.

“No matter how much and how long an adopted child loves his new home and hates his ancestral home, there will come a day he or she will be reminded by his adopted home that he doesn’t belong there.

“If African-Americans are still reminded that they belong to Africa, a Nigerian singing the colonial song in the UK parliament will not change his or her true identity,” Sani posted on X.

Recall that Badenoch had defended British colonialism during a debate on the UK’s response to the Black Lives Matter Movement.

She has also been criticised for making snide comments about the country.

Also, recently the Chairman and CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, revealed that her office reached out to Badenoch but received no response.

Dabiri-Erewa, who spoke on Channels Television, stated that Nigeria would not compel the British politician to embrace her Nigerian roots if she chose not to.

“It depends on whether she embraces her Nigerian identity. We reached out to her once or twice, but there was no response. We don’t force anyone to acknowledge being Nigerian,” she explained.
