A Dangote truck driver reportedly lost control while driving recklessly, resulting in the death of a motorcyclist and injuring a female passenger in Area B, near Point Road, on the way to Airways in Apapa, Lagos State.
It was gathered that the collision, which occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, was a result of the truck driver's loss of control due to dangerous driving.
SaharaReporters learnt that the truck driver and his assistant fled the scene, abandoning the vehicle.
A statement released on Wednesday by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq, said the motorcyclist died immediately at the scene.
Taofiq attributed the tragic incident to the alleged reckless driving by the Dangote truck driver.
The statement reads, "The collision, which occurred in the early hours, was a result of the truck driver losing control due to dangerous driving. The truck struck the motorcyclist, who had a female passenger on board.
"Despite the intensity of the crash, LASTMA Officials quickly intervened, rescuing the severely injured passenger and rushed her to Apapa General Hospital for urgent medical attention.”
He said both the truck driver and his assistant fled the scene, abandoning the vehicle.
"In coordination with the Area B Police Station, LASTMA officers secured and removed the truck, handing it over to the police for further investigation,” he said.
"The LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, issued a strong caution to truck drivers, urging them to observe speed limits and ensure their vehicles undergo regular maintenance before taking to the road.”
He also called on commercial motorcyclists to desist from using prohibited routes, including highways and bridges across the state.
"Mr. Bakare-Oki stressed the importance of strict adherence to traffic regulations by all road users to prevent further tragedies of this nature.
"While extending his deepest condolences to the family of the deceased motorcyclist, the General Manager expressed hopes for the swift recovery of the injured passenger receiving treatment at Apapa General Hospital," Taofiq added.
