The management of the National Youth Service Corps has announced that the administration of President Bola Tinubu has not yet released funds to implement the recently approved monthly allowance of N77,000 for corps members.

This was disclosed in a press release issued by the NYSC Edo State Secretariat on Thursday, explaining that the government's non-release of the money is the reason behind the delay in implementing the increased allowance.

The Nigerian government in September approved the NYSC monthly allowance increase from N33,000 to N77,000, effective July 2024, in line with the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024.

But SaharaReporters gathered that the government surprisingly paid NYSC members their old monthly allowance of N33,000 for September, despite the approval to increase it to N77,000.

This development has left many corps members disappointed, as discovered by SaharaReporters through conversations with serving members.

Reacting to the public outrage that trailed this development, NYSC said in the statement issued on Thursday that the “Federal Government has not yet released the promised increment in the personal allowance to Corps members”.

“However, arrears will be paid into corps members accounts with effect from July 2024. 2023 Batch C Corps members should be rest assured that all their entitlements will be paid,”
it noted.

The statement continues: “Also we wish to inform the Corps members and the general public, particularly our stakeholders that payment for their participation as Adhoc staff in the last gubernatorial election in Edo State is solely the responsibility of INEC and not NYSC Management.

“This is to debunk the rumors making the rounds that NYSC has deliberately withheld the said allowance.

“However, the management is making all efforts to ensure that the institution saddled with this responsibility pays the concerned Corps members as soon as possible. We enjoin our Corps members and stakeholders to continue exercising patience and understanding with the scheme.”
