The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has vehemently condemned the murder of Superintendent of Police (SP) Halliru Liman by a military officer at a checkpoint in Kebbi State, calling the incident “alarming and unacceptable.”

A statement released by the Zamfara State Police Command identified the alleged shooter as Hassan, a soldier attached to OPHD Sector 6 in the Dan Marke area of Bukkuyum, Zamfara State.

Despite SP Liman identifying himself as a police officer, Hassan reportedly shot him in the head, causing his immediate death.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, at approximately 10:30 am, as SP Liman, the Divisional Police Officer of Wusagu Division in Kebbi State, was en route to a monthly conference in Birnin Kebbi.

According to the Police statement, Liman was stopped by military personnel at a checkpoint, where he identified himself.

“We are deeply saddened and disturbed by the senseless killing of SP Halliru Liman.

“The circumstances surrounding this heinous crime are alarming and unacceptable. SP Liman was brutally murdered by military personnel despite identifying himself as a police officer,”
the statement said.

The Police Force condemned the unprovoked attack in the strongest terms and called for a thorough investigation into the incident.

The statement stressed that the action of the military personnel involved was a blatant violation of the rules of engagement and the principles of inter-agency cooperation.

“We urge the relevant authorities to take immediate action to address this egregious incident and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

“The police and military must work together to maintain peace and security, not engage in violent confrontations that undermine public trust.”

The Nigeria Police Force extended its deepest condolences to the family and colleagues of SP Halliru Liman, vowing to pursue justice for the fallen officer.
