The incident happened in an aquarium at a Randburg shopping mall.
It was designed to replicate natural habitats, featuring elements like reefs and a mermaid to enhance the ocean-like environment for viewing pleasure.
In a video capturing the incident, the mermaid gracefully swam upward before her tail became entangled in the reef at the tank’s bottom.
Struggling for breath, she promptly removed the tail and ascended to the surface to take in air while many watched in fear.
