Drama ensued at Marriott Hotel in Owerri on Thursday, Nov. 2, after reservations made months ago by former students of the Federal Government Girls College, Owerri, were given out to politicians, leaving them stranded.
The old girls had travelled from different parts of the world to Owerri, Imo State, for their 50th global reunion only to discover that the hotel had allocated their rooms to politicians.
A viral video that surfaced online captured the chaos that ensued in the hotel lobby when the women, tired from the journey, could not access their rooms.
In the video, a voice is heard saying, "A deeply regrettable incident occurred at the Marriott Hotel in Owerri where reservations for the Federal Government Girls College, Owerri, who had gathered for their 50th global reunion, were left disheartened.
"What we have learned is that, despite reservations made several months prior to this date, at the last moment, the hotel management gave the reserved rooms to politicians who arrived, leaving many former students of the Federal Government Girls College, Owerri, stranded in the lobby with no place to rest and no accommodation to stay."
Recall that in preparation for the upcoming governorship election scheduled for November 11, the Imo State government submitted a request to secure exclusive booking of all hotel rooms within Owerri.
The Imo State Commissioner for Tourism, Jerry Egemba, issued a memo addressed to all Chief Executive Officers of hotels located in the Owerri metropolis.
The memo, issued on Oct. 25, disclosed the state government's intention to reserve and pay for all available hotel rooms in the state capital from November 4 to November 11 and hotel CEOs were asked to provide their booking fee so that they can be paid by the state government.
