Director of Press and Public Relations at the Office of the Accountant-General, Mr. Bawa Mokwa, disclosed this to DAILY POST on Tuesday in an inquiry over the alleged delays of workers’ salaries.

The Nigerian government has announced that December salaries for federal workers have been paid since Monday, December 23, 2024, in time for this year’s Christmas celebrations.

Director of Press and Public Relations at the Office of the Accountant-General, Mr. Bawa Mokwa, disclosed this to DAILY POST on Tuesday in an inquiry over the alleged delays of workers’ salaries.

According to him, “They (the Nigerian government) have started paying since yesterday.”

When asked about the reasons for the delay of the November salary, he explained that it was due to shortfalls as a result of the implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage.

He, however, noted that the issue has been resolved and payment has been made to that effect.

“Last month, you will observe that some people didn’t get their salaries on time. Some ministries were having shortfalls.

“Yesterday, they paid all, and even the ones that had shortfalls, they ensured that they were augmented and paid. So, it now depends on the banks.

“It varies from bank to bank on how it will drop, but they have been paid.”

This comes as federal government workers in the Federal Capital Territory lament the delay in the payment of their salaries and its impact on this year’s Christmas celebration.

According to a civil servant, who preferred anonymity, he decried that he could not travel to celebrate this year’s Christmas because of salary delays.

“The salary delay situation is unfortunate. It has made this year’s Christmas difficult for me and my family. We couldn’t travel due to the delays,”
he told DAILY POST.
