A Nigerian police officer, identified as Inspector Abass, has been arrested for allegedly killing a civilian while under the influence of alcohol.
It was gathered that the officer, who is part of the Mobile Police (MOPOL) unit, fell into a gutter while in a drunken state and accidentally discharged his service rifle, shooting an unidentified person.
SaharaReporters learnt that Inspector Abass was brought to a cell in the middle of the night at the FCID in Abuja.
"One officer got drunk, fell into a gutter, and fired his gun. The officer's name is Abass. The officer has been locked inside a cell at FCID in Abuja. The female officer who brought him in said the officer was drunk; he had fallen into a gutter and accidentally shot someone," a source in FCID said.
The source also told SaharaReporters that the officer is from MOPOL 50 though this has yet to be confirmed.
The MOPOL team is reportedly headed by Officer Shuaib Sunday.
"He has been saying that he has family issues, but the female police officer who locked him up accused Abbas of always being a drunkard.
"The NPF does not care about the mental health of its officers. Some officers need psychiatric evaluation or assessment, while others require rehabilitation, social orientation, reorientation, psychotherapy, etc.," the source added.
When SaharaReporters contacted the Nigerian Police spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, he declined the calls and did not respond to the message sent to him.
