A young Nigerian man, who is popularly known as the Abuja Flag Boy, has kick-started a ‘one-man protest’ tagged ‘Hungry Dey’ in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The lone protestor stood around Wuse Market on Friday morning with a placard which reads, ‘Hunger Dey’.

This comes barely three weeks after thousands of Nigerians launched a national protest tagged #FearlessInOctober. Before that, in August, many Nigerians flooded the streets for nationwide protests tagged #EndBadGovernance.

The demonstrations, aimed at drawing attention to economic hardship, poor governance and other pressing social issues, were met with heavy police presence.

Multiple videos showed demonstrators running away after tear gas canisters were released into the air by the police.

This came after the FCT police command strategically deployed large personnel and equipment throughout Abuja in anticipation of the protests.

“These proactive deployments aim to ensure that residents of the FCT enjoy a hitch-free Independence Day celebration.

“The deployment will include Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) personnel, anti-riot equipment, visibility policing, among others,”
FCT police command spokesperson SP Josephine Adeh, said in a statement.
