Today Is A Bad Day For Ndigbo – Ohanaeze Mourns Iwuanyanwu’s Death

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo has expressed sadness over the death of its President-General, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu.

They described it as ‘a bad day for Ndigbo’, while confirming the demise.

Iwanywanwu died on Thursday, and the development was confirmed in a statement by his son, Jide Iwuanyanwu.

According to the statement, the 82-year-old Iwuanyanwu died after a brief illness.

The statement stated that the family would announce the burial details later after due consultations.

The Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Alex Ogbonnia, while speaking with journalists on Thursday in Enugu over the tragic loss, said, “Today is a bad day for Ndigbo. It’s true! Ahaeji aga Mba is gone.

“Ohanaeze is yet to issue an official statement on the demise of our President General, Chief Iwuanyanwu, but he is gone.”


Iwuanyanwu was elected the President General of the apex Igbo cultural organisation on April 20, 2023, following the death of his predecessor, Prof George Obiozor.

The deceased is the second President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo to die in office after Obiozor, who also died in office.

He served as the 11th President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

Iwuanyanwu is survived by his wife, Lady Princess Frances Iwuanyanwu, many children and grandchildren.

He was a renowned businessman and politician, born in September 1942 in Umuohii, Ikeduru LGA, Imo State.
