The President also urged Nigerians to bear the pains of economic reforms embarked upon by his government amid the biting inflation and worsening hardship, saying that he would never turn his back on Nigerians.
Nigerians recently chanted at President Bola Tinubu during the 2024 Democracy Day celebration parade.
Rather than cheering President Bola Tinubu in a happy mood, Nigerians were on Wednesday recorded on camera shouting “Minimum wage, Jagaban wage,” as the President waved at the crowd at the Eagle Square, Abuja during the Democracy Day celebration parade.
Recall that we earlier reported that President Tinubu during 25th Nigeria’s Democracy Day speech on Wednesday morning said his government had "negotiated the new minimum wage in good faith" and "will soon send an executive bill to the National Assembly to enshrine the agreed-upon wage for the next five years or less.”
The President also urged Nigerians to bear the pains of economic reforms embarked upon by his government amid the biting inflation and worsening hardship, saying that he would never turn his back on Nigerians.
Tinubu, who also addressed the recent negotiations with the organised labour on a new national minimum wage, said it was important to have both political and economic democracy, urging the nation to continue working towards a brighter future.
According to him, there is a need for reforms to create a stronger foundation for growth.
The President Tinubu-led Nigerian government and the organised labour led by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) had been going back and forth for the upward review of the new national minimum wage from N30,000.
Whereas the Nigerian government has proposed N60,000 minimum wage for workers, the organised labour has insisted on N494,000, threatening to resume its suspended nationwide strike if the government fails to meet its demand.
