Parading the suspects before newsmen on Thursday at the Command’s Headquarters, Diamond Hill, Calabar, the state commissioner of police, Gyogon Grimah, said the suspect was arrested in Ikom.
The Cross River State Police Command has showcased several criminal suspects, among them Amber Ubung, a man who allegedly attacked his lover with a machete for not visiting him on Valentine's Day.
Parading the suspects before newsmen on Thursday at the Command’s Headquarters, Diamond Hill, Calabar, the state commissioner of police, Gyogon Grimah, said the suspect was arrested in Ikom.
According to him, on the 17th of February, at about 10:00 hours, some community leaders from Okuni in Ikom Local Government Area reported at Ikom Area Command that one Amber Ubung, aged 30 years, of the above community, gave his girlfriend, Blessing Onawu 25, the sum of seven thousand naira (N7,000) to make her hair and thereafter visited him the next day being February 14, 2024 (Valentine’s Day).
“After waiting patiently, the said lady did not show up. The suspect, armed with a machete, went to the dwelling house of Blessing Onawu, attacked her, and gave her several machete cuts all over her body with the intent to kill her.
“In an attempt by the victim’s mother to rescue her from the bloody Amber, he in turn used the same machete to inflict various degrees of machete cuts on her.
“In a swift response, a team of policemen were mobilised to the scene, and the suspect was arrested with the machete. The suspect was transferred to SCID for a discreet investigation and diligent prosecution as soon as the investigation is concluded. Meanwhile, the victims are receiving treatment in different hospitals.”
Speaking with journalists, the suspect, Amba Ubung, who is a farmer, corroborated what the commissioner said, but stated that he carried out the dastardly act under the influence of alcohol.
“I didn’t know myself that day because I had taken ‘combined’. When I went to her place, I wasn’t happy because of what she had done.
“When I asked her why she refused to show up, she started laughing. I felt so bad and used the cutlass I was holding to injure her. When the mother came and held me, we started dragging the cutlass, so I didn’t know if, in that process, the knife cut her. I didn’t know myself,” he said.
Other suspects arrested for armed robbery in different parts of the state include Kingsley Michael ‘m’ age 27, Promise Emmanuel ‘m’ age 25yrs, Praise Onyinyechi ‘m’ age 26yrs, Nsikak Johnson ‘m’ age 25yrs, Amber Asan Achima ‘m’ aged 25yrs, Francis Ugbe Ogar ‘m’ aged 29yrs, Gabriel Ebri Ojah ‘m’ aged 23yrs, Chukwuma Uche Joseph ‘m’ aged 29yrs, Oluchukwu Okoro ‘m’ aged 30yrs, Wamchi Michael ‘m’ aged 29yrs.
Also arrested were two murder suspects, Idara Aniefiok Amos ‘m’ age 29yrs of No. 22 Asuquo Asuquo Street, Calabar, and Njama Meshak ‘m’ age 26yrs information received from Kayang 1 Community, Boki LGA, who attacked and murdered two residents of the community with a machet.
