A woman and her nine-day-old baby have been confirmed dead after a one-storey building collapsed in Akure, the state capital.
The incident occurred at Ayedun Street around Hospital/Egbe Road in the early hours of Wednesday, December 13, 2023 when a newly installed overhead water tank fell and crashed into the building.
According to a neighbour, the baby who was christened on Tuesday, died instantly while the elder brother of the baby and their grandmother sustained varying degrees of injuries.
"The building collapsed due to the water tank erected inside the compound. It was newly erected and the blocks weren’t dry enough when it was erected. It was a sad incident,” he said.
The bodies of the woman and her child were evacuated by the police and deposited at a morgue in Akure while the injured were already receiving treatment.
Spokesperson of the State Police Command, Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, who confirmed the incident to Daily Trust, said the collapse was caused by the overhead tank newly installed in the compound.
