The United States and Israel, which claim that a ceasefire only benefits Hamas, joined eight other countries in voting against the motion.

The United Nations has called for immediate ceasefire in Gaza as the war between Hamas and Israel continues.

UN made the call on Tuesday,.

This is also as US Vice President, Joe Biden warned Israel that it was losing international support due to its “indiscriminate” killing of people in its fight against Hamas militants.

After UN officials issued dire warnings about a worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, the 193-member UN General Assembly backed a resolution calling for a ceasefire, with 153 countries voting in support and 23 abstaining.

The United States and Israel, which claim that a ceasefire only benefits Hamas, joined eight other countries in voting against the motion.

The resolution is not legally enforceable, but it bears political weight since it reflects a global perspective on the war.

Last week, the United States blocked a similar request in the Security Council’s 15-member body.

The Palestinian Authority applauded the resolution and encouraged other countries to put pressure on Israel to implement the ceasefire.

In a Telegram statement, Hamas official in exile Izzat El-Reshiq reiterated that stance, saying Israel should “stop its aggression, genocide, and ethnic cleansing against our people.”

Before the resolution’s passage, Biden stated that Israel now has the support of “the majority of the world,” including the United States and the European Union.
