In compliance with the directives of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) to embark on a nationwide strike, some public schools in Osun State on Tuesday have been reportedly shut down.
Recall that the Labour Unions had earlier asked its affiliate bodies to embark on industrial action.
Reports obtained on Tuesday revealed that students had resumed at their various schools in Osun around 9 a.m. today before the teachers sent them home. According to the PUNCH, some of the students were seen on the streets around Stadium, Ayetoro and West Bye pass, Osogbo returning home.
Journalists who visited some schools within the metropolis observed that teachers were in their various offices while the students had been sent home.
Some of the schools reportedly visited include Fakunle High School, Osogbo, Saint James Grammar School and Adenle Grammar School also located in Ayetoro Area, Osogbo.
That the school teachers were sceptical to comment on the incident. However, a few who granted audience to journalists on condition of anonymity said they had resumed work only to be told of the commencement of the strike by labour leaders.
“We can’t hold back the students when the labour leaders came around and asked us to shut down operations. The students have been released but many teachers are still around the premises,” The PUNCH quoted a male teacher identified as Johnson saying.
When contacted, Osun NLC acting chairperson Modupe Oyedele, said workers in the state complied fully with the strike directive.
She said, “Workers in Osun complied fully. Osun is in full compliance with the strike directive.”
It was also gathered that security operatives have mounted strategic points in Osogbo in an apparent move to prevent a breakdown of law and order.
Although police operatives were stationed at Lameco Junction, Old Garage and Olaiya Area of Osogbo, economic activities were however going on without hitch in the areas visited.
