Floods Claim 33 Lives In Adamawa

The Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA), which disclosed this on Tuesday, said 1,600 households that comprise 9,960 individuals displaced by floods are taking shelter in 11 camps.


 

At least 33 persons have been killed by flood in some parts of Adamawa State since the beginning of the rainy season.

The Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA), which disclosed this on Tuesday, said 1,600 households that comprise 9,960 individuals displaced by floods are taking shelter in 11 camps.

The Executive Secretary of ADSEMA, Muhammed Suleiman, speaking at a stakeholders meeting summoned to address flood-related challenges, said the agency established the relief camps in four badly affected local government areas, namely Yola North, Yola South, Lamurde and Demsa.

The emergency stakeholders meeting, organized by the state government, was attended by humanitarian actors and some relevant agencies to discuss matters arising from increased volumes of water from the river banks.

“As a result of the ravaging floods, the state government, through ADSEMA, established 11 camps across four local government areas,”
the ADSEMQ chief executive said.

Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri who spoke on the occasion through his deputy, Professor Kaletapwa Farauta, said as people-driven government, the government is working to reduce the impact of the floods on the citizens.

He said approvals had been made to ensure that the basic needs of affected people are provided to ensure their safety and good health.

The governor reiterated that though some schools have been occupied by the flood victims, the situation would not hinder learning as government would ensure rom making arrangement to ensure that learning activities are not affected.

Earlier, the commissioner of Rehabilitation, Reconstruction and Reintegration, Barr. Bello Hamman Diram and his counterparts from Ministry of Information and Strategy Neido Geoffrey as well as that of Women Affairs and Social Development Wunfe Anthony said the meeting is necessary to save lives and property.
