There are indications that the federal government might consider the option of dragging NLC to the industrial court to prevent the colossal damage an indefinite nationwide strike could cause the economy.

There will be a meeting between the Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong and the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Monday, September 25.

The meeting is a move to halt the planned indefinite strike by organised labour unions.

It was earlier reported that NLC threatened to embark on strike after the Federal Government failed to attend to its demands.

The organised labour union had raised the issue of minimum wage and other areas following the removal of fuel subsidy.

A source who spoke with ThisDay said Lalong is employing all options, including holding informal talks with the NLC president and other labour leaders.

The source disclosed that the move is a plan to persuade them to wait for the government’s pronouncement on their demands, which was expected this week.

The source said, “Although the ministry was yet to fix any formal meeting with NLC, indications emerged that the minister was engaging informally with the labour leaders to persuade them to give the government more time to sort out issues relating to the demands.”

There are indications that the federal government might consider the option of dragging NLC to the industrial court to prevent the colossal damage an indefinite nationwide strike could cause the economy.

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of NLC would meet on Tuesday to decide if it would embark on the nationwide strike.
