Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation has condemned the killing of eight security operatives in Imo State.

The operatives were killed by unknown gunmen.

The group’s reaction was contained in a statement by its National President, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike.

While expressing sadness over the murder of the security men, Okwu said such an act was alien to the principles Ndigbo were known for.

He said, “the Igbo people are known to have respect for the sanctity of life; they are not used to shedding blood, no matter who is involved.

“Such barbaric murder of security operatives or anyone else stands unjustifiable; it is reprehensible, against the moral and conscience of an average Igbo man.

“We appeal to all those behind this mayhem to lay down their arms and allow for dialogue.

“The recent developments underscore my views that there is a need for a security summit in the South-East, as well as an all encompassing dialogue, where all aggrieved interests would be allowed to lay their grouse on the table.

“May we also for the umpteenth time appeal to the Federal Government to free Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. This will bring to an end those hiding under the demand for his release to be committing atrocities.”

Okwu, however, appealed to security agencies not to wage war on the people of Umuezeala Owerre in Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State.

“We are aware of the anger and provocation this killing has aroused in the hearts of the various arms of security agencies.

“While we deeply sympathise and mourn with the families of the slain security operatives, we appeal that the Army, the Police and the NSCDC, whose officers were murdered, should act with utmost caution in order not to take revenge on innocent residents of the community.

“A misdirected retaliatory attack would only inflict harm on innocent people; this is why we are calling for restraint,” Okwu pleaded.
