The Federal Government has stated that there is no replacement for what the late Taiwo Akinkunmi did for the country.

Akinkunmi was the designer of the Nigerian flag.

He designed the flag while studying abroad prior to the country’s independence in 1960.

Akinkunmi, a native of Ogun State, died a few days ago in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Muhammad Idris, led a delegation of the Federal Government to visit the family of the deceased in Ibadan on Monday.

Idris, while speaking on behalf of the Federal Government, noted that the efforts of the deceased are well appreciated.

He said: “We are here to console the family on behalf of Mr President. Pa Akinkunmi’s role cannot be forgotten. It is a symbol that we have yet to find a replacement for. He designed it when he was in his 20s, and he lived for more than 60 years after he designed it. Mr President received the news of his death. We want to identify with the family and the people of Oyo State.

“We came to tell them that the Federal Government identifies with them and the people of Oyo State and to say that the Nigerian government will stand by them.”

Remi Akinkunmi, who spoke on behalf of the family, thanked the delegation and expressed gratitude for the visitation.
