Nigeria’s First Professional Golfer, Patrick Okpomu Is Dead

It was gathered that he died in Port Harcourt, Rivers State at the age of 75 after a brief illness.

Patrick Okpomu, the first professional golfer in Nigeria has passed on.

Naija News gathered he died in Port Harcourt, Rivers State at the age of 75 after a brief illness.

Okpomu died on Tuesday August 8.

According to the NTA, the Professional Golfers Association of Nigeria General Secretary, Jide Bolaji noted that the man fondly called 001, was among the first young Nigerian golfers who travelled to the United Kingdom for Professional training.

Upon returning from the UK, he and three other young Nigerians (Namely: Late Jamiu Oyebajo, Late Emmanuel Lawrence and Festus Makelemi) formed the PGA of Nigeria in 1969.

Okpomu according to reports, recently officiated as the Chief Golf Referee at the 14th PGA of Nigeria Qualifying School which was held at Python Golf Course in Port Harcourt July 2-8, 2023 where 36 Gentlemen and 4 Ladies were administered to the roll call of Professional Golfers in the country.
