An 8-year-old Chinese boy has been confirmed dead after he was allegedly beaten by a martial arts instructor.
The boy, whose name has not been released, was declared dead at the Third People’s Hospital in Chenyang on June 18, the Straits Times reported.
Later that day, the owners and one coach from Chongde Juying Martial Arts Sports Club in Qingdao were arrested in connection with the incident, the outlet said.
The child’s parents enrolled him at martial arts school just one day before his death and paid $1,440 for one year of coaching.
The parents, however, subsequently received a disturbing video in which they say their son looked pale and was covered in bruises.
Stills from the footage of the alleged beating circulated online showing the boy huddled on the floor wearing an orange T-shirt with the training school’s name on the back, Fox News Digital said.
In the video, a woman’s voice can be heard telling the boy that if he keeps collapsing, his mom “has told me she will not pick you up for one year,” according to the Straits Times.
The footage also allegedly shows a man trying to prop up the child while he complains he has been kicked by the instructor.
The boy’s heart stopped 20 minutes before he got to the hospital, Fox said, citing Chinese media.
The Chenyang branch of Qingdao’s Public Security Bureau says an investigation into what happened at the martial arts club — which was only licensed in April — is ongoing.
The three suspects are expected to face charges related to “intentional harm leading to death.”
