This comes after Usman was beaten to death on Sunday over the alleged blasphemy, causing tension in parts of the state.

Force Public Relations Officer, Prince Olumuyiwa Adejobi has warned Nigerians against killing people in the name of blasphemy.

He called on clerics to enlighten their followers on the issues of blasphemy against prophets.

He stated this in a tweet on his verified handle while reacting to the killing of a Sokoto State resident, Usman Buda Mai, who was accused of degrading the personality of Prophet Muhammad.

Usman was beaten to death on Sunday over the alleged blasphemy, causing tension in parts of the state.

According to the Force spokesman, although blasphemy is an offence in the nation’s constitution, the law should not be enforced by members of the public.

He wrote, “Sokoto command has been on it. Let’s wait for their report and action. But I think we need to call on our clerics to carry out enlightenment on this issue.

“Blasphemy, though an offence recognized by Nigerian law, is not subject to the whims of members of the public for enforcement”.
