The minister made the assertion on Thursday, May 4, during an interactive session with the Senate Committee on Power and heads of agencies in the power sector in Abuja.

The Minister of State for Power, Abubakar Aliyu has claimed that cost of electricity consumption in Nigeria is the cheapest and most defaulted by consumers in the world.

Aliyu made the claim on Thursday, May 4, during an interactive session with the Senate Committee on Power and heads of agencies in the power sector in Abuja.

According to him, “Cost of electricity in Nigeria is the cheapest across the globe, particularly gas to power, which is highly subsidised.

For example, while cost of electricity in Nigeria is 15 cent per kilowatt , it is 42 cent in Niger Republic, 23 cent in Republic of Benin , 25 cent in Mali , 28 cent in Senegal , 27 cent in Burkina Faso etc.”

Mr Aliyu complained that while the Nigerian government is making efforts to ensure its citizens have access to affordable electricity, many consumers and even government agencies default in payment of electricity bills.

We have a good salary that we can use to pay utilities bills here in Germany even if it's expensive compared to Nigeria, why not increase the minimum wages of Nigerians and supply constant electricity and see if Nigerians won't meet up with the bills . Nigerians are hard working people.

tour_lanny:

While unemployment is high, poverty rate is rising, cost of living is expensive. Good work minister. I can’t say your children will suffer because that’s not realistic. Na my papa I blame.

taiwo_junzi:

Minus the fact that’s this is a blatant lie, what’s the essence of the “cheapness” if it’s not working?

tildastores:

with the irregularities right, it ought to be free cos it's stressful depending on Nigerian electric commission
