A witness said that many Okada riders were arrested on Wednesday by the police for violating the state traffic laws despite repeated warnings.

Our reporter observed that the riders who usually ply their trade between Mile 2 and Cele because of an ongoing construction work, stayed away from the area for fear of arrest and likely loss of their bikes in the process.

Several police patrol vans with anti-riot officers were seen strategically stationed along the road to ward off any attack on police facilities in the area.

The state’s police spokesman, Benjamin Hundeyin, said that the Wednesday incident happened while the police were enforcing the ban on commercial cyclists in that part of the state.

He said, “While enforcing the existing ban on the use of motorcycles in parts of Lagos State, police officers of Isolo Division came under attack from motorcycle riders at the Cele Bus Stop, resulting in the death of one police inspector and serious injury to the DPO.

“Two suspects have been arrested while 41 motorcycles have been impounded. The Lagos State Police Command will not be deterred from carrying out its mandate of enforcing duly established laws”.
