President Muhammadu Buhari was present at the event along with members of the National Peace Committee.

Ahead of February 25th presidential elections, flagbearers of political parties converged in Abuja on Wednesday, to sign a peace accord.

President Muhammadu Buhari was present at the event along with members of the National Peace Committee.

Some of the leading candidates in attendance include Bola Tinubu (All Progressives Congress, APC), Peter Obi (Labour Party, LP), Omoyele Sowore (African Action Congress, AAC), Atiku Abubakar (Peoples Democratic Party, PDP) and Rabiu Kwankwaso (New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP).

The peace accord is voluntary and not mandatory for political parties to participate. However, it’s a mediation process that helps forestall electoral-related violence.

No fewer than 18 candidates are jostling to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari as president of Africa’s most populous country.
