It was learned that the suspect kidnapped the girl while her mother was out shopping for groceries in her Toyota Corolla in Akure's Lafe Area.

A suspected kidnapper has been arrested while attempting to withdraw a portion of the ransom money he was paid.

It was gathered that the kidnapper had abducted a six-year-old girl in her mother's car at a grocery store in Akure, Ondo State's capital.

The suspect had demanded N50 million in exchange for the girl's release.

Mrs Chukwu-Ezedima, the girl's mother, reported her daughter's kidnapping on December 21, 2022, at 9.00 p.m., said SP Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ondo State Command, in a statement made available to newsmen in Akure on Saturday.

Odunlami-Omisanya stated that the suspect, who allegedly demanded N50 million in ransom from the family, was apprehended on December 31, 2022 at a POS stand while attempting to withdraw a portion of the money.

She did not say whether the ransom was paid in full.

During interrogation, the suspect admitted to committing the crime, while the victim was rescued unharmed.

“The suspect will soon be arraigned in court,” the police spokesperson said.

The Nigerian Army, according to the police spokesperson, also turned over a man arrested for illegally possessing firearms to the police.

Odunlami-Omisanya stated that a Nigerian Army patrol conducting a routine check at Elegbeka in Ifon, Ose Local Government Area, received information about a man (names withheld) allegedly in possession of a revolver.

She stated that the patrol team investigated the allegation and arrested the man with the locally manufactured gun.

“The suspect initially claimed he found the gun on a farmland, but later confessed that the gun was given to him by a welder (names withheld) currently in a Correctional Centre in Okene.

“The suspect has been handed over to the Police and would soon have his day in court,” the Police PPRO added.
