A 44-year-old Nigerian businessman, Donald Ejike Aneke, has been arrested.
The Apapa Wharf-based businessman was arrested by the Police at the Zone 2 Command, Lagos.
He was charged before the Tinubu Magistrate’s Court, Lagos Island for allegedly obtaining the sum of N4.5m from his customer under false pretence.
The accused was said to have collected the money from the complainant, Mr Anyanacha George with the promise to provide five trucks for him to convey plywoods to Abuja.
He was alleged to have failed to provide the trucks and instead converted the money to his use and went into hiding.
According to the police, following the development, the complainant petitioned the Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG in charge of Zone 2 Command, Lagos who directed his men to fish out the defendant anywhere he might be hiding.
The Police team tracked and arrested the defendant at a hide out in Lagos.
Police Prosecuting Counsel, ASP Stephen Molo informed the Court in the charge Marked M/46/2022 that the defendant committed the offence on 7 April, 2022 at Wharf, Apapa, Lagos.
Molo told the Court that the defendant tricked the complainant and collected the sum of N4.5m from him with the promise to provide five trucks for him to convey plywoods to Abujaz, but that instead, the defendant converted the money to his use and failed to supply the trucks for the complainant leading to his arrest.
Molo said the offences, the defendant committed were punishable under sessions 314 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges and the Magistrate, Mrs Gbajumo Ayoku granted him N759,000 bail with two sureties in like sum.
Ayoku adjourned the case till 11 December, 2022 for mention and ordered that the defendant be detained at the Ikoyi correctional facility till he perfected the bail conditions.
