The impeached Speaker of Ekiti State House of Assembly, Gboyega Aribisogan, has cried out.

He said some people are planning to assassinate him.

He made the claim while discussing the Ekiti State House of Assembly speakership controversy on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics.

Aribisogan was eventually impeached on Monday after barely one week in office and replaced with the Assembly Chief Whip, Rt. Hon. Olubunmi Adelugba.

There had been trouble in the House after Aribisogan (Ikole constituency 1) emerged as the Speaker, following the demise of the incumbent, Hon Funminiyi Afunye, who died in October 2022 after he reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest.

Aribisogan was elected at the plenary last Tuesday after polling 15 votes against his opponent Hon Olubunmi Adenugba, who had 10 votes.

However, he alleged that an ex-governor, Kayode Fayemi, was not in support of his candidacy and had vowed to get him impeached immediately.

“They don’t want democratic processes to take place in the Assembly and these people are up with arms and saying that they are going to assassinate the Speaker (me) and take over the place.

“The majority of the members of the House of Assembly voted for me but a few of them who felt I did not follow the directives of the former governor of the state, Kayode Fayemi, vowed to make the place ungovernable,” he said.

The police had shut down the Assembly complex on Wednesday, citing intelligence reports that there were plans by some hoodlums to burn down the facility.

Aribisogan said had said there was a high probability he would be impeached today, claiming that the ex-governor already had seven House members who had agreed to carry out the process.

Speaking on the crisis, Yinka Oyebode, Special Adviser, Media to Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, said the police locked down the complex to prevent hoodlums, who were planning to burn down the Assembly complex, to gain entry.

While noting that the governor would not get involved in the crisis, Oyebode insisted that it is within the power of the legislators to resolve their issues.
