The retirees led by the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) were seen on major streets yesterday holding placards, banners and posters with different inscriptions defining their anguish.

The former government workers commenced their match from Nassarawa Emir’s palace through State Road to Government House, lamenting non-remittance of their entitlements year after year since their retirement.

Speaking on behalf of the retirees, the NLC chapter chairman in Kano, Kabiru Ado Minjibir, demanded the remittance of 17 per cent of employers’ monthly contributions to the Pension Fund Trustees as complied and remitted by the mainstream civil service under the office of the Head of Civil Service and some parastatals such as the judiciary.

From records, Minjibir revealed the outstanding retirees’ benefits in the state as of June 2022 as N36,971,782,088.79 and the unremitted 17% contributions from defaulting organisations as N69,257,961,597.98.

According to him, the figure cut across three successive administrations from April 2006 to August 2022 under Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, Dr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and incumbent Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.

Responding to the aggrieved retirees, Governor Ganduje who was represented by his Chief of staff and Head of Service, Usman Bala, appealed to the former government workers, pledging the government’s quick intervention on the issue.
