Popularly known as “Ummita,” the deceased was killed at Janbulo Quarters in the Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano.

A Chinese national, Geng Quanrong, has been remanded by a Magistrate’s Court sitting in Kano State.

He was remanded over the murder of his Nigerian lover, Ummukulsum Sani Buhari.

SaharaReporters earlier reported that outrage and anger trailed the gruesome murder of the young Nigerian woman, who was on one-year mandatory service to Nigeria with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

Popularly known as “Ummita,” the deceased was killed at Janbulo Quarters in the Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano.

The deceased was buried around 10am last Saturday, according to Islamic rites.

The mother of the 23-year-old Nigerian woman revealed that the Chinese national first pushed her down when she opened the door for him after he had banged on it several times. She immediately rushed to her daughter's room where he stabbed her to death.

She subsequently raised the alarm but regretted that efforts to save her failed as she died before they reached the hospital.

The Chinese Business Community in Nigeria (CBCAN) Head, Mike Zhang, had condemned the gruesome killing in a statement on Monday, noting that the criminal act should be handled professionally by relevant security agencies.

“The Chinese community in Kano is fully in support of the law taking its proper course.

"The people of China appreciate the hospitality so far received in Kano and will continue to be law-abiding, and contribute to the state’s development.

"We condoled with the family of the deceased, a graduate of Agriculture Science from Kampala University," the statement had read.

However, the court on Wednesday ordered that the accused person be remanded in Kurmawa Medium Security Custodial Centre.

The order of the court followed the arraignment of the accused person before the court by the police on the charge of culpable homicide contrary to section 221 of the penal code.

Hanif Sanusi Ciroma, the Magistrate, held that the court lacked the jurisdiction to entertain the case.

Prosecution counsel, Khalifa Auwal Hashim, thereafter appealed to the Court to return the accused to the custodial facility since it had no jurisdiction pending the legal advice from the Kano State Ministry of Justice.

The magistrate, in granting the appeal, ruled that the accused person be remanded at the custodial facility till October 13, 2022, for arraignment before a court with jurisdiction.
