According to the union, no threats will force members to suspend the industrial action backed by constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Kaduna State branch has said its members will not resume academic activities.

ASUU Kaduna branch made this public on Tuesday.

According to the union, no threats will force members to suspend the industrial action backed by constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The union branch chairman, Dr. Peter Adamu, stated this in an exclusive interview with THE PUNCH in Kaduna while reacting to a statement issued by the KASU management which threatened academic staff union to resume work or face sanctions.

Adamu said the strike action was legitimate and backed by national and international laws.

“There is no section of the law of Kaduna State University or Staff Condition of Service that stipulate any form of sanction on lecturers participating in an action that will benefit the university,” Adamu stressed.

He added, “The strike action is for the betterment of the University system and Kaduna State University inclusive.

“If you take your time and visit the school, you will see that most of the buildings we have there are all products of this kind of struggle.

“We are not bordered about any threat that would come because even during the military era, such threat came and they were overturned by thecourt of the land.

“We have not suspended the strike action. We are committed to the industrial strike action until the Federal Government respond positively.”

While responding to the examination earlier conducted by the school management while the industrial action was on, the Union Chairman explained that it was not the union that closed down the school.

He explained that the management can go extra mile to use whatever method to conduct their exams.

He said, “The school can decide to use past questions or whatever but we’re not involved and our members are resolute to continue in this strike action that is legitimate and guaranteed by the constitution.”

Adamu also called both on the Kaduna State Government and the students to understand that the strike was for the benefit of all.
