Some of the repentant insurgents wore T-shirts with inscriptions: “Please forgive us. We have repented. Let us rebuild Borno again.”
Nigerians have blasted the government of Borno state and the federal government after former terrorists were seen wearing t-shirts and begging for forgiveness from members of the public.
The ex-insurgents were also seen cleaning communities across Maiduguri, the state capital, Borno State to show that they are sorry.
Recall that Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) in collaboration with the Borno State Government organized the sanitation exercise in efforts to prepare them for their reintegration process.
Some of the repentant insurgents wore T-shirts with inscriptions: “Please forgive us. We have repented. Let us rebuild Borno again.”
Speaking of the exercise, CDD’s Senior Research Fellow, Mala Mustafa said the exercise is to change the narrative and prepare them for their reintegration process.
Mustafa said: “The rationale behind this exercise is for CDD to support the Borno state government as part of preparatory work for the reintegration of the ex-combatants.
“We felt it is imperative to change the narrative, particularly the negative perception about them among community members.
We want to rebuild relationship and trust between those that surrendered and community members.”
Some Nigerians have taken to social media to express their reservations.
