Danny Mills, a former Manchester City and Leeds United right-back, has aired his thoughts on Lionel Messi.
The ex-footballer has suggested that Lionel Messi, the Paris Saint-Germain superstar, is no longer the player he used to be.
According to Mills, despite being the best player to have played the round-leather game, none of the top six Premier League teams would sign him right now.
Messi, who is in his late 30s, is indisputably among the legends of football but is most definitely in the twilight of his career.
Messi, who has won a record seven Ballon d’Or awards, has frightening goal figures, with 769 in 974 games across his career with an added 331 assists.
The Argentine football icon joined PSG last summer on a free transfer and was one of the biggest talking points before the start of last season.
Messi managed just 11 goals in 34 games in 2021/22 – his worst return since 2005/06.
Mills, a former Derby County and Charlton defender, does not see any of the top six sides in the EPL making any move to sign the Argentina superstar right now.
He told talkSPORT: “Would you take Lionel Messi, who I think is the greatest footballer I have ever seen. I didn’t see Cruyff live or Maradona.
“Messi is the best footballer I’ve ever seen. I know Ronaldo’s numbers are a little better and he’s more of a big game player.
“In terms of being a footballer, Messi is the greatest.
“But would you take Messi in your team now, probably not.
“I don’t think they [top six] would take him. Liverpool? No. Man City? No. Tottenham? No, I don’t think they would.”
