ASUU Chairman, University of Ibadan, Professor Ayo Akinwole made the call while addressing journalists on Tuesday.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called on Nigerians to pressure the government to meet its agreement.

ASUU Chairman, University of Ibadan, Professor Ayo Akinwole on Tuesday urged Nigerians to beg the federal government fulfill its part of the agreement it signed with the union to avert looming strike action.

Akinwole speaking shortly after a congress of the union in Ibadan, appealed to Nigerians to prevail on the present administration led by President Muhammadu Buhari to implement the agreements reached with ASUU in 2009.

Flanked by other executive members of the union, Akinwole said it was now evident that the present administration was paying lip service to education at the detriment of children of the poor.

The ASUU chairman explained that there will be no need for a strike if the government has been faithful.

He said the union only wants the government to be faithful.

“We wish to inform you of the antics of the federal government. The government has not been fulfilling agreements since 2009.

“The government has been foot-dragging. The government is yet to fulfil its agreements.

“We are now telling the public that the government is playing with a time bomb.

“We are now calling on the people to prevail on the Nigerian government to honour agreements with ASUU.

“If the government fulfils its agreements, there will be no need for a strike.

“What we are saying is that the government should be faithful”.
