Following the collapse of the 21-storey building in Ikoyi, Lagos State, the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute, (NBRRI), has set up an investigative committee to ascertain the immediate and remote cause of the disaster.

A statement by the Institution indicated that the building collapse team from the Institute’s national laboratory complex in Ogun State has already visited the site to collect samples, which will be subjected to thorough laboratory investigations and analysis.

The Research Institute said the assignment is neither a probe nor investigation of persons or organizations but rather an established practice, designed to provide a case study based on a technical report that is enshrined in scientific and engineering principles, to provide knowledge and information to forestall future occurrence.

The Institute, however, condoled with families of the victims of the avoidable disaster and prayed for a safer working environment for all in the building environment.

The latest building collapse in Lagos which killed many has dominated the media space with experts calling for the sanction of all parties involved in the use of substandard materials while embarking on such projects.

They also urged regulatory agencies to be up and doing in ensuring that all relevant building regulations are enforced across the country to avoid similar incidents.
