The management threatened to give the corpses mass burial within two (2) weeks from this publication should their relatives and friends fail to come and claim them.

In what will come across as a rather startling development, the Federal Medical Centre in Owerri, the Imo State capital, on Wednesday, raised the alarm over the large number of unclaimed corpses in the mortuary of the hospital, according to Daily Post.

The management threatened to give the corpses mass burial within two (2) weeks from this publication should their relatives and friends fail to come and claim them.

Achonu Hacinta, the Public Relations Officer of the hospital, confirmed that so many corpses have overstayed at the hospital’s morgue without identification.

Recall that Imo State became a theatre of war few months ago, with corpses overrunning the Federal Medical Centre, mortuary, in Owerri.

Many of the corpses are alleged to be victims of extrajudicial killings or those caught in crossfire between security forces and the unknown gunmen.

The facility has now called on those who may have missing relatives to visit the hospital mortuary as the limited space is filled with corpses whose address or relations are not known.

“The relatives are requested to come and identify and claim the corpses within two weeks”, it said, maintaining that corpses not collected within the stipulated period would be given mass-burial.
