The suspected robber sustained serious injuries during the battle before he died.
A suspected armed robber who engaged in a gun battle with the Delta State Police Command’s Rapid Response Squad, RRS at Umunede Community has died.
Two other suspects escaped with bullet wounds.
The Police also recovered a locally made pistol loaded with a live cartridge and two expended cartridges from the injured suspect.
The Delta State Police Command led by CP Ari Mohammed Ali confirmed the report in a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe.
He said the RRS on routine stop and search duty along the Benin/Asaba express road in Umunede Community flagged down a Lexus 350 jeep with reg. No. WWR 343 MD, white in colour with three occupants.
According to the Police image-maker, “The suspects on noticing the operatives, stopped abruptly, disembarked from the vehicle, shot sporadically and ran into the bush.
“The operatives returned fire and went after them. During the gun duel, one of the hoodlums was fatally wounded while the remaining two escaped with bullets injuries.
“Upon search, a locally made pistol loaded with a live cartridge and two expended cartridges were recovered from the injured suspect.
“The injured suspect was immediately rushed to the hospital where he gave up the ghost while receiving treatment. ”
He noted that “The Lexus 350 Jeep was retrieved. ”
DSP Edafe said a manhunt for the fleeing members of the gang is ongoing.
