Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed
According to a report by The PUNCH, some teachers in Bauchi State, numbering 52, have lamented the non-payment of their salaries by the government, with some of them being owed up to as many as 59 months.
Speaking to journalists at the Ministry of Education Headquarters where they went to submit a letter demanding the payment of their salaries, the chairman of the affected workers, under the aegis of the Teachers’ Rights, Bashir Usman, described their situation as “sad and pathetic.”
He said that some of their issues were inherited by the current Bala Mohammed administration from the past government, while the salaries of some of them were stopped by the current administration.
“I am here with my members due to our unpaid salaries. There are series of issues, some of which are, abscondment, premature retirement, change of name, date of birth, PSN miscapturing, and those who are deceased but are still on the payroll, which caused the non-payment of our salaries.
“Some of us have not been paid for many months, ranging from three to 59 months; and some of the problems of this unpaid salaries were inherited from the past administration; while some of us were affected within this present administration.
“Those of us that were affected by this administration have not been paid for between three and 21 months,” he said.
Usman said that the non-payment of their salaries had thrown most of them into untold hardships, such that they cannot feed their families and provide their needs.
Asked what their next line of action would be if the government doesn’t attend to them immediately, he said that they would protest peacefully.
“Our next line of action is to demonstrate peacefully and in a manner that will show that we are law-abiding citizens who are teachers and role models,” he stated.
When our correspondent called the Permanent Secretary and acting Commissioner of Education, Dr. Sule Madara, for a reaction on phone, he denied knowledge of the teachers’ complaint.
“I don’t even know, I am not even in Bauchi. I don’t know about their issue, I don’t know,” Madara told our correspondent.
