The 54-year-old said the experience left him on ‘death’s door’ and still causes unusual symptoms a year later.

Neil, 54, was treated in hospital with covid-19 last year.

Neil, a man who survived the COVID-19 scourge, has talked about his horrific experience.

The man who was treated in Redditch has said he no longer likes beer anymore after the virus ‘changed his taste buds’.

Neil from Warwickshire spoke to BBC 5 Live about his battle with coronavirus, which left him on a ventilator at the Alexandra Hospital shortly after the first lockdown was announced last year, Birmingham Live reports.

The 54-year-old said the experience left him on ‘death’s door’ and still causes unusual symptoms a year later.

When asked by host Nicky Campbell whether he was able to enjoy a beer in the garden after his stay in the hospital, Neil said: “I actually don’t like beer anymore bizarrely.

“My taste buds have changed so I don’t like all the beers I used to like before I had Covid.”

Several others have reported suffering from post-Covid parosmia, a condition where tastes and smells are distorted.

In one case, a sufferer said they could smell fish in place of any other scent while another could smell burning when there is no smoke around.

Describing his time spent on a ventilator at the Alexandra Hospital, Neil said: “This time last year I was self-isolating because I had a bit of a cough when Boris gave us the news we were all shutting down.

“A week later I’m on blues and twos getting rushed to the Alex hospital in Redditch with coronavirus.
“This is when things start a little bit hairy, to say the least.

“I think I’m only in the hospital for 12 hours but two days later I’m put on a ventilator. It’s one of the most life-changing experiences I’ve ever had.
“You don’t know what’s going on, you have no sense of anything that’s going on with your body.

“I feel sorry for my family and friends. I’m oblivious to everything and my poor brother had to phone up every day to see how his little brother is and I’m on death’s door.

“It wasn’t until the end of May I could see my brother and thank him for everything he had done for me.”
